Clean The Bay Day

Shoreline Cleanup of Mason Neck State Park

June 7, 2008

On Saturday June 7th, Thirty one volunteers collected 1480 pounds of trash and debris from the shoreline of Mason Neck State Park1.

Among the items collected were;

This particular event was organized by the Arlington Fairfax Chapter of the IWLA in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as part of "Clean the Bay Day", an annual effort to remove illegally dumped solid waste from the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Although most "Clean the Bay Day" events were scheduled to start at 9 am, tidal conditions2 on the Potomac River dictated that the clean up could not start before 1 pm. Unfortunately this coincided with unseasonably high temperatures3 and near one hundred percent humidity in the afternoon hours

For this particular cleanup the group of volunteers were divided into 3 crews.

Joe Chudzik of the Mason Neck Lions Club led the crew working from Kanes creek west to the Canoe Launch .

Arlington Fairfax Chapter Member Bob Muzzio led the second crew which travelled by canoe to Sandy Point.

The third crew worked the shoreline parallel to the Bay View Trail.

Arlington Fairfax Chapter member Greg Singleton volunteered himself and his motorized jon boat to transport bags and other trash to the collection point.

Jim Thackaberry of The Friends of Sligo Creek helped to load and unload trash from the canoes and the boat

Bottled water and other soft drinks were provided to the volunteers by The Mason Neck Lions Club as well as Arlington Fairfax Chapter Members Colin Smit and Colin Riley.

The Membership of the Arlington Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton would like to thank all those volunteers who gave up a Saturday Afternoon to help us out.
We would also like to thank Chief Ranger Tim Smith, Park Manager Jess Lowry and the other Park Staff for their assistance and the loan of the Park's canoes.
