Household Hazardous Waste

Many useful household products can contanminate the watershed if they are not disposed of properly. Unfortunately we come across these items all too often in the course of our cleanup events

Spray can of insecticide found beside Bull Run

5 gallon container of motor oil found in flood plain of Bull Run

Empty spray cans are not necessarily empty, the propellant will often run out before contents are completely used. If the can is allowed to rust, then the remaining contents will leak out. The spray can pictured above was found in flood debris in Bull Run. It contains a pyrethrin insecticide which is highly toxic to invertebrates and fish.

Environmentally Hazardous Materials Collected

September 12, 2009 - Lead Acid Auto Battery. Found on the Route 66 side of Cub Run 1/4 mile upstream of Compton Road Bridge.
May 10, 2009 - Large spray can of WD-40 lubricant. Found in flood debris on Bull Run, 1/4 mile downstream of the Route 28 Bridge.
May 3, 2009 - 5 gallon bucket containing several quarts of used motor oil. Found in the woods near the Rt 28 Access point parking lot.
March 7, 2009 - 1 Gallon yellow plastic container filled with used motor oil. 5 gallon bucket of detergent powder. Found on the Prince William side of Bull Run, 1/2 mile downstream of the Route 28 bridge.
March 1, 2009 - 5 Gallon black plastic container filled with motor oil or some other petroleum based lubricant. Found on the Prince William side of Bull Run, 1/4 mile downstream of the Route 28 bridge.
January 8, 2009 - Gallon plastic jug containing two quarts of ethylene glycol based radiator fluid and a lead acid car battery. Found in an illegal dump near Bull Run
October 19, 2008 - Spray can of Wasp and Hornet Insecticide. Found in Bull Run, 1/4 mile downstream from the Route 28 Access Point
October 12, 2008 - Quart Bottle labeled Rotella T 15w40 motor oil still containing 13 ounces of liquid. Found at the confluence of Bull Run and Little Rocky Run.
September 14, 2008 - Unlabeled black plastic bottle containing about a quart of what appeared to be used motor oil. Found on the bank of Bull Run, approximately 1/4 mile downstream from the Route 28 Access Point. Spray can of insecticide in the same area.
August 2, 2008 - Full unlabelled gallon paint can containing with what appeared to be latex paint. Found on the bank of Bull Run, approximately 1/2 mile downstream from the Route 28 Access Point.

The containers found at Bull Run were disposed of properly at the Fairfax County Household Hazardous Waste Facility
