On March 7th, in one of our more physically demanding cleanups, 7 volunteers removed almost 500 pounds of trash from a 0.9 miles length of Bull Run's flood plain in order to prevent it from being washed further downstream.
It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the low 70's.
Most of the trash that we encountered was flood borne debris likely from last year's flooding in September and May.
The items of greatest concern that were found on this site were plastic jugs of motor oil. A one gallon plastic jug was found during this cleanup and a full five gallon container was removed from the property last weekend.
The origin of this material is unknown but there may be other containers up or downstream.
