Adopt A Stream Cleanup of Bull Run

May 4, 2008

On the afternoon of May 4, 2008, 9 volunteers from the Arlington Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America collected over 250 pounds of trash from Bull Run downstream of the Route 28 Access Point. While much of this debris was collected from the shore, a great deal was fished out of the water by volunteers wading in Bull Run. Where the water was too deep to wade, trash was picked up using a kayak.

Among the debris collected were;

• Hundreds of glass and plastic bottles as well as broken glass
• styrofoam cups,styrofoam floats,styrofoam bait containers and styrofoam peanuts and countless fragments of styrofoam
• plastic bags and packaging
• A surprising number of items of footware such as sandals, running shoes and flip flops
• A large number of tennis balls and dog chew toys.
