Potomac Watershed Cleanup of Mason Neck State Park

April 4, 2009 - 9:00 am to 12:00 noon

On Saturday April 4th, 28 volunteers filled 34 bags with trash and debris collected from the shoreline of Mason Neck State Park as part of the 21st annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup sponsored by the Alice Ferguson Foundation.
Also picked up were 6 tires with rims, a large chunk of polystrene foam and a large sign. Total weight of the trash collected was 918 pounds.

Strong winds with gusts up to 40 mph created rough conditions on the normally placid Belmont Bay making it unsafe for our volunteers to use the Park's canoes to get to Sandy Point, a trash hot spot. Choppy conditions also prevented the use of motorboats to transport the trash from the shoreline to the canoe launch. We were however able to move the bags and tires in canoes towed by volunteers wading in the water. Hopefully there will be calmer conditions on our next cleanup at Mason Neck on Sunday June 7, 2009.

Among the volunteers participating were members of the Arlington Fairfax Chapter of the IWLA, Scouts from Troop 1137 as well as Members of The Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria.
