In our largest Watershed Conservation Event to date, 56 people participated in a cleanup of Mason Neck State Park
as part of the 21st annual "Clean the Bay Day" sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Volunteers included a group of students from Hylton High School, members of the Mason Neck Lions Club, a group from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and of course many Arlington Fairfax Chapter Members.
In 3 1/2 hours, 930 pounds of styrofoam, plastic bottles, plastic bags and other waterborne trash were removed from the shoreline and floodplain of the Park.
Volunteers were hampered somewhat by highwater from recent rains but weather conditions were a big improvement over those at last years Clean the Bay Day when the temperatures reached 98 degrees with 100 percent humidity.
Chapter Members Vinnie Caporale and Paul Gwaltney used one of the Parks canoes to ferry more than two dozen volunteers over inlet in Belmont Bay and back again at then end of the event.
Launching from Pohick Bay, Chapter Members Aubrey Petitt and Rich Vigue brought out their motorboats to pick up the collected trash from the shoreline.
Dick Kennedy of the Mason Neck Lions Club and Sylvia Cowans manned the sign in/out table in order to ensure that all volunteers were accounted for at the end of the day.
Bob Muzzio led a group of volunteers working the shoreline parallel to the Bay View Trail.
Joe Chudzik of the Mason Neck Lions Club led a small group of volunteers who travelled by canoe to Kanes Creek.
Ken Gigliello led another group which travelled by canoe around Sandy Point
Ned Foster, a chapter member and president of Friends of Little Rocky Run, led a large group of volunteers that worked west from the Bay view trail toward Sandy Point.
